백신애 문학은 빈민들의 빈궁한 삶에 대한 자연주의적 묘사/여성적 정체성과 자아인식이라는 두 가지 차원에서 주로 연구되어 왔다. 이 글에서는 지방성의 관점에서 백신애 문학의 내적 논리와 일관성을 해석해 보고자 했다. 백신애는 지방을 근거지로 두고 사회주의 활동과 여성문단에서의 활동을 경험했고 이는 백신애가 현실을 보는 독특한 시각을 형성한다. 백신애는 주류 사회주의 담론과 여성문학의 담론에 거리를 두면서 봉건성의 이데올로기와 근대성의 이데올로기가 충돌하는 현장을 세밀하게 작품화하였으며 그 사이에서 자신의 언어를 잃어버린 여성성의 주체위치에 문제를 제기한다. 백신애 문학의 지방성은 이러한 백신애 문학의 특성을 추동하는 거점이었다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 현실의 긴장관계를 관찰하면서 타자화된 주체성의 자기탐구로 나아갔다는 데 백신애 문학의 독특성이 있다. 이러한 백신애 문학의 세계는 한국 리얼리즘 문학이나 여성문학의 스펙트럼을 더욱 확장하는 실천이었다고 평가할 수 있다.

The works of Baek Sin-ae have been studied mainly focused on the two different dimensions; Naturalistic Description of the poor and feminist identity. This article scrutinizes their inner logics and consistencies from the viewpoint of locality. She worked for socialist movement and feminist literary field as a local writer, which enabled her to have a unique vision of the world. She shaped the colliding spots between feudalistic ideology and modern one into her works. Her works feature self-research of othered subject gazing relation of the tension of the reality. The literary world of Baek Sin-ae would be evaluated as a practice that extends the spectra of Korean realist and feminist Literature.
