서양인들의 삶속에 깊숙이 내재되어 그들의 삶을 지배하고, 서양 학문의 근간이 되는 철학적 사상이 있는 것처럼, 동양에도 그와 같은 사상이 있다. "음양오행사상" 혹은 "음양오행설"로 불리는 것이 그것이다. 음양오행설은 동양의 수많은 사람들이 오랜 세월 동안 자연과 우주를 관찰하여 이룩한 과학적인 사상이다. 이와 같은 사상은 서양의 철학적 사상이 서양인들에게 그랬던 것처럼 동양인들의 삶을 지배하였으며, 동양학문의 철학적 근간이 되어 학문의 발전에도 크게 기여 하였다. 이와 같은 음양오행설은 인간의 언어에도 깊이 투영되어 있을 것임은 분명하다. 그럼에도 불구하고 현대의 언어이론은 서양사상과 철학에 바탕을 둔 언어이론만 있을 뿐, 동양사상에 근거한 언어이론은 전혀 없는 상황이다. 동양사상에 깊이 젖어있는 동양의 언어학자들까지도 동양사상에 근거한 언어이론의 창출에는 관심이 없고 심지어 백안시 하며, 오로지 서양사상에 근거한 언어이론으로 언어현상을 분석하는데 여념이 없다. 이에 본고는 동양의 고유사상이자 철학인 `음양오행설`의 개념과 원리를 활용하여 여러 언어현상들을 설명함으로써, 음양오행설의 언어이론 활용가능성을 확인하고자 한다. 한글 자음과 모음의 창제 근거, 한국어의 모음조화현상, 변별자질이론 등을 살펴본 결과 이미 음양오행설은 언어현상을 분석하는 이론으로 기능하고 있었으며, 인간이 사용하는 언어들의 음운체계, 자음의 모음적인 특성의 내포, 하나의 음운단위인 음절의 구성, 문장의 구성요소들 분석, OCP 효과의 음양오행설로의 대체 가능성 등의 점검을 통해 음양오행설이 언어현상 분석이론으로 충분히 활용될 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

As the western world has its own traditional philosophy governing it`s own study and life, so the eastern world has it`s own traditional idea. It is `the doctrine of the five natural elements of the positive and negative`. The idea had been the basis of study in the east for a long time and it is deeply impressed in the mind of the orientals until now. So this study tries to find out the possibility using the Eastern idea as a linguistic theory. To search the possibility, this study first checked some linguistic phenomenon already explained depending on the idea such as Hangul letter system, Korean vowel harmony and the distinctive feature theory. And this study investigated if the philosophy could be used as an alternative theory to explain some linguistic phenomenon such as the structure of a syllable, vowel-like features of some consonants, composing elements of a sentence and segments system in a language, etc. and finally compared with OCP. Through this investigation this study shows the possibility that the idea can be used as an alternative linguistic theory.
