본 연구는 언론인들의 여성 정치인을 대한 인식을 성역할과 정치인이라는 두 차원에서 실증적으로 논의하고 있다. 구체적으로 살펴보면, 연구가설 1은 여성 정치인과 남성 정치인에 대한 언론인들의 이미지 인식 요인들 사이에 차이가 있는지, 연구가설 2는 여성 정치인에 대한 이미지가 지지도에 영향을 미치는지를 각각 검증하였으며 마지막으로 연구문제는 언론인들이 취재원으로서의 여성 정치인들의 어떻게 받아들이고 있는지 등을 질문하였다. 연구가설 1과 2를 검증하기 위해서는 수도권 지역에서 활동하는 신문과 지상파방송, 통신사 소속의 기자와 프로듀서 143명에 대한 조사(Survey)를 시행했으며 연구문제를 위해서는 4∼18년 차의 인천일보 언론인 14명에 대한 심층인터뷰를 진행하였다. 분석 결과 언론인들이 바라보는 여성 정치인은 정치인으로 보기에 앞서 여성의 이미지를 갖고 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이러한 연구결과는 게이트키퍼인 언론인들의 보도과정에 영향을 미치고 수용자들은 여기에 노출될 수 있다는 점을 시사하는 것이다.

This study focused on journalists` perception of female politicians` images under the guidance of role congruity theory. The following research question and hypotheses were asked and tested: 1) there is a difference in journalists`s perception about female and male politicians; 2) the journalists` perception about female politicians have an impact on approval ratings; 3) how journalists perceive female politicians as sources? For hypothesis 1 and 2, survey was conducted among 143 journalists and the data of in-depth interview were collected from 14 journalists in order to answer the research question. The result showed that journalists perceived female politicians as females rather than political figures.
