본고는 남북의 문화적 이질감을 극복하고 대중성과 예술성을 충족시킬 수 있는 실천적 의미로서 남북 역사소설을 고찰하고자 한다. 최근 남북 문화 교류에서 대중적인 호응을 얻고 있는 역사소설은 문화콘텐츠로서의 가능성을 보여주고 있다. 원형 콘텐츠가 문화콘텐츠로 전환되는 과정과 방법은 다양한데 남북 역사소설의 경우 여러 가지 형태의 콘텐츠로 발전할 수 있는 활용방안을 모색해 볼 수 있다. 본고는 남북 역사소설에 문화적 감성을 가미하여 문화산업형 콘텐츠로 가공하고, 남북 역사소설에 학술적 역할을 부여하여 학술정보형 콘텐츠로 활용하며, 다른 문화콘텐츠와 차별화하여 남북 역사소설의 독창적 의의를 민족문화형 콘텐츠로 발전시킬 수 있는 방안을 제시하고자 한다. 문화산업형 콘텐츠는 엔터테인먼트 산업화와 스토리텔링 산업화로 분류되어 역사소설이 창작 소재로 활용될 수 있다. 학술정보형 콘텐츠는 자료구축 활용과 학술연구 교류로 나누어지며 교육과 학술적 효과를 얻을 수 있다. 민족문화형 콘텐츠는 한민족으로서의 정체성을 확립하고 통일문화의 이미지를 제고할 수 있다. 문화콘텐츠로서 남북 역사소설이 궁극적으로 지향하는 것은 소통과 상생의 통일문화콘텐츠의 의미이다. 이를 위해 문화콘텐츠적 요소를 발굴하고 남북 교류를 통한 합작이 이루어져야 하며 상품화의 단계를 거쳐야 한다.
