본 연구의 목적은 허준의「습작실」연작을 통해 그의 작가의식과 작품세계의 변화양상을 살펴보기 위한 것이다. 허준의 초기 소설이 대부분 인간 내부의 심리묘사나 근원적 고독을 문제 삼았다면, 해방 후 그의 시선은 역사나 사회와 같은 거시적인 차원으로 확장되는 양상을 보인다. 따라서 해방을 전후하여 발표된 「습작실」연작은 허준의 작품세계의 변화 양상을 분명하게 보여줄 수 있는 유용한 텍스트라 할 수 있다. 본 연구의 대상은 구체적으로 「습작실에서」(1941)와 「續습작실에서(1947), 그리고 최근 발굴된 「習作部屋から」(1940)이다. 「習作部屋から」는 「續습작실에서」의 저본이 되는 작품이다. 해방 전에 발표한 「習作部屋から」를 해방 후 발전시킨 작품이 「續습작실에서」인 셈이다. 본 연구에서는 우선 「習作部屋から」와 「續습작실에서」를 비교 분석해 보았다. 「習作部屋から」가 「續습작실에서」의 모태가 되는 작품이란 점에서 이에 대한 검토는 필수적이다. 지금까지 허준의 습작실 연작에 관한 연구들이 「습작실에서」와 「續습작실에서」의 관련만을 문제 삼았다면, 「習作部屋から」에 대한 검토는 그 원형으로부터의 출발이란 점에서 의미를 가진다. 나아가 「습작실에서」와 「續습작실에서」가 연작소설로서 갖는 의미를 살펴보고 두 작품의 대비를 통해 작가의식의 변모양상과 작품 속의 주요 모티프인 ‘돈’과 ‘죽음’이 갖는 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 결과적으로 「續습작실에서」가 보여주는 냉철한 분별력과 균형감각은 해방공간의 작품 중에서도 주목할 만한 성과라 할 수 있을 것이다. 「습작실」연작에서 발견되는 타자를 통한 주체의 변화 가능성은 내면적 고투를 격은 자의 진정성에서 기인한 것이다. 외부 세계에 대한 작가의 태도는 연작을 통해 추상성에서 역사성으로, 관념성에서 육체성으로 확장되었다고 볼 수 있다. 하지만 자의식에 바탕하여 세부적인 심리묘사로 인간의 내면을 탐구하고, 시류에 휩쓸리거나 영합하지 않고 자의식과 역사의식이 빚어내는 갈등과 긴장 속에서 균형 감각을 보여주었던 허준은 해방공간의 정치적 상황 속에 매몰되어 버린다. ‘역사’와 현실 정치로의 투신은 더 이상 그에게 작품 창작을 가능하게 하지 않았다. 월북이후 그가 창작활동보다 정치활동에 투신한 것은 끝내 자신의 자의식을 청산할 수 없었음을 의미하는 것이기도 하다.

This study is conducted to look into Huh Jun`s character and transition aspects of the work world through Huh Jun`s 「Seupjaksil」 series. Huh Jun`s early novels mostly make an issue of psychological description and fundamental loneliness inside the men, and his view is shown to be expanded to the macroscopic perspective like history and society after Liberation. Therefore, the series 「Seupjaksil」 published around Liberation can be the useful text to show transition aspects of Huh Jun`s work world vividly. The study subject is 「Seupjaksileseo」(「습작실에서」,1941), 「Sok Seupjaksileseo」(「續 습작실에서」,1947), and 「習作部屋から」(1940) that was recently found. 「習作部屋から」 is the basic work of 「Sok Seupjaksileseo」 which is developed from 「習作部屋から」 that was published before Liberation. This study compared 「習作部屋から」 and 「Sok Seupjaksileseo」 and then analyzed them. Given that 「習作部屋から」 is the matrix of 「Sok Seupjaksileseo」, the analysis on 「習作部屋から」 is essential. Studies on Huh Jun`s 「Seupjaksil」 series only discussed the relations between 「Seupjaksileseo」 and 「Sok Seupjaksileseo」 while the study on 「習作部屋から」 is meaningful in that it started from the prototype. Furthermore, the study looked into the meaning that 「Seupjaksileseo」 and 「Sok Seupjaksileseo」 have as a series of novels as well as the writer`s transition aspects and the meaning of `money` and `death`, major motives through the comparison between two works. In conclusion, dispassionate discernment and a sense of balance in 「Sok Seupjaksileseo」 can be the noticeable outcome among works of Liberation period. The possible changes in the subject through the other found in a series of novel are from authenticity of those who experience mental struggles. The writer`s attitude about the outside world seems to be expanded from abstractness to historicity and from ideality to materiality. However, Huh Jun, who explored humans` inside through the description of specific psychology, didn`t follow and compromise with the trend, and showed balance in tension and conflicts between a sense of identity and historical consciousness, was criticized coldly in a political situation of Liberation period(1945-1948). His dedication to `history` and `politics` is no longer possible to create works. After defecting to North Korea, he devoted himself to politic activities more than writing activities because he finally failed to get rid of a self-consciousness.
