인터넷과 정보통신의 발전으로 언론 서비스를 제공하는 신문사도 웹을 통해 다양한 뉴스를 제공하고 있으며, 나아가 독자들의 제보나 의견 등도 수렴하고 있다. 따라서, 정보취약계층에 대한 웹을 통한 신문매체 접근성 또한 매우 중요하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 한국과 미국의 대표적인 신문사 웹 사이트에 대한 접근성을 매뉴얼 평가를 통하여 수행하였다. 그 결과, 첫째, 한국은 인식의 용이성 부분에서 이미지 등과 같은 비텍스트 콘텐츠의 과다한 사용과 대체 텍스트 제공이 미흡하여 접근성 준수율이 떨어지고 있었다. 둘째, 한국은 미국의 신문사 웹 사이트에 비해 운용의 용이성 부분에서 이미지 맵에 대한 적절한 대체 수단 제공을 하지 않고 있었다. 셋째, 이해의 용이성에서는 양국 모두 데이터 테이블 사용을 절제를 하고 있으나, 요약, 제목 및 헤더의 제공에 있어 국내 사이트가 미흡한 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 기술적 진보성에 대한 평가에서는 양국 모두 비슷한 준수율에 있으나, 자바스크립트 기능 사용에 대한 평가에서는 미국의 접근성 준수가 월등히 높은 것으로 조사되었다.

With remarkable development of Internet and Information Technology, in the field of press, most newspapers also provide a variety of news and collect readers` opinions via web. Therefore, it is also very important to guarantee the web accessibility of newspaper web sites for disabled and elderly people. In this paper, we perform a comparative analysis of the newspaper web site accessibility between Korea and the USA by manual evaluation. The results of our analysis are as followings. (1)In the section of Perceivable evaluation, the Korean newspaper web sites overfull use non-text contents such as images, etc., and do not provide suitable alternatives contents for non-text contents, remaining a lower level for guaranteeing the web accessibility compare with the USA. (2)In the section of Operable evaluation, the Korean newspaper web sites do not provide suitable alternative for using image map technologies. (3)In the section of Understanding evaluation, the Korean and USA newspaper web sites also are moderated in using tables, but the Korean newspaper web sites are inadequate to provide summary, title and header, etc. (4)In the section of Robust evaluation, the Korean and USA newspaper web sites have almost same level, however the USA newspaper web sites are superior in using Java Script control.
