조기는 우리 민족과 1,000여 년간 함께해 온 우리 민족의 대표적인 수산물이다. 고려시대 이후 조기는 식용뿐 아니라 국가간 조공무역의 물품, 국왕의 하사품, 약용, 제수용품 등 다양한 형태로 이용한 가장 대중적인 어종 중의 하나이다. 조기는 동중국해에서 서식하다가 산란기에 우리 연안으로 올라오는 회유성 어종이기 때문에 식품으로서의 의미뿐 아니라, 수산자원 측면에서도 중요한 의미를 가지고 있다. 하지만 최근 조기의 어획량 감소에서 알 수 있듯이 우리 연안어장의 어족자원에 큰 변화가 일어나고 있다. 어족자원의 변화는 어획고와 어획어종의 변화로 이어지고 이것은 우리나라 연안어업의 변화를 일으키게 될 것이다. 우리 나라의 경우 전업 어민과 함께 반농반어(半農半漁)의 농가가 상당수 존재하고 있음을 감안한다면 이러한 어족자원의 변화는 단순히 어민만의 문제는 아니다. 조기의 역사적인 의미를 조명함으로 인하여 우리 연안의 어족자원에 대한 중요성을 강조하고자 하며, 조기와 같은 회유성 어종에 대한 보호와 육성이 근본적이고 현실적인 어족자원 활성화 방안이 될 것이다. 우리 연안의 어족자원이 단순히 경제적인 의미만을 가지고 있는 것이 아니라 그 이상의 의미를 가지고 있음을 상기시키는 것이 우리 연안의 어족자원의 변화에 능동적으로 대처하고 수산자원의 지속적인 유지와 개발을 위한 출발점이 될 것이다.

A croaker is representative marine products which lived together our ethnic for 1,000 years. After Korea Dinasty, a croaker has used various forms of goods as like international trade, a bounty of a king, Medicinal use and ritual food goods. and one of the most popular fish in Korea. A croaker has a important meaning not only as a food but also as a fisheries resources for it lives in East China Sea and to move to the our coasts(Yellow Sea) in the spawning season. But recently a large change is happening to fisheries resources in a fishing ground coastal as you can know production decrease of a croaker. Changing of fisheries resources lead a change of production and specifies of fishes and affect a change of coastral fishery in our country. If you keep in your mind that there is not only a number speciality fishermen but also a lots of half-fishermen in Korea, a change of fisheries resources is not simply an issue of a fisherman only. I will emphasize to importance of fisheries resources of the our coast. as a look into historical meaning of a croaker. Protection and Incubation of migratory fishes like a croaker is will be a realistic activation plan for fisheries resources. To remind that fisheries resources of our coast has more than a economic meaning, it is the beginning for continuous maintenance and development of fisheries resources in our coast.
