이 논문은 육구연의 수양 이론에서 四端의 역할을 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 세 가지 논점을 살펴볼 것이다. 첫째, 육구연의 본심/사단에 대한 강조는 장재-이정-주희의 도학파 이론에 대한 비판을 함축한다. 도학파는 `옳은 것[理]`에 대한 인식을 통해 마음이 `좋아하는 것`을 확인할 것을 주장하지만, 육구연은 `좋아하는 것[四端]`을 확인함으로써 `옳은 것`을 정당화하고, `옳은 것`을 실천하려는 動機를 생성할 수 있다고 주장한다. 둘째, 육구연 수양 이론의 초점은 비도덕적인 상태의 사람들이 어떻게 도덕적인 상태로 전환하고자 하는 `의지`를 생성하는가 하는 문제이다. 이는 放心 상태의 사람들이 어떻게 求放心하려는 `의지`를 가지는가의 문제이기도 하며, 이 주제는 南宋 유학계에서 중요한 이론적 문제였다. 셋째, 육구연의 이론에서 四端은 마음의 도덕적 경향성으로서 항상 발현된다. 마음의 도덕적 경향성인 사단은 현실의 비도덕적인 요소와 `충돌`하며, 이러한 `충돌`은 상식과 관행, 내면화된 판단 체계가 가진 비도덕성을 `차단`하고 이에 대한 `의심`을 일으킨다. 이러한 `의심`은 우리 마음의 본래성, 즉 우리 마음이 진정으로 좋아하는 것에 대해 `집중하여 살펴보려고[思]` 하는 의지가 만들어지는 출발점이 된다.

This dissertation aims to clarify the role of four clues[四端] in Lu Jiuyuan(陸九淵)`s theory of self-cultivation. There are three main themes in this thesis. First, Lu Jiuyuan`s emphasis on Ben-xin(本心) and four clues suggests strong criticism for the school of Cheng-zhu(程朱). Cheng-zhu generally say that the Li(理) is the basis of human mind. It means that if one tries to ascertain one`s mind, then one must firstly recognize the Li(理). On the other hand, Lu Jiuyuan thinks that if one ascertains one`s preference for the good, Lu Jiuyuan calls it Ben-xin/four clues, one knows what is right and what one have to do. Second, Lu Jiuyuan tries to explain how to form a person`s moral will. It is, so to speak, an academic question how to motivate unmotivated people. Third, four clues is a revelation of human nature and so good. As a revelation of innate goodness of human nature four clues conflict and cut off a flow of immoral common sense and custom. We can motivate ourself to doubt what we have regarded as the right thing and to find out what the mind truly wants through this conflicting and cutting off.
