이 글은 195,60년대 최정희 소설에 나타난 `전쟁`의 의미를 밝혀보고자 하는 목적에서 씌어졌다. 최정희는 해방 이후 「탄금의 서」를 비롯한 자전소설류와 「녹색의 문」, 「끝없는 낭만」, 「인간사」 등의 장편을 발표하였다. 「탄금의 서」는 총 9편의 단편으로 구성된 연작소설로, 최정희가 김동환과 함께 덕소에서 보낸 일상과 이후 그녀가 겪게 되는 전쟁이 고스란히 담겨 있는 자전소설이다. 이 소설을 통해 최정희는 해방과 전쟁이 자신의 삶을 어떻게 재조직하고 또 파괴하였는지 낱낱이 기록, 정리하고 있다. 그렇다면 최정희가 실명까지 거론하며 소설과 일기, 자전소설 등을 통해 자신이 처한 당시의 상황을 재연해 반복 서술하는 이유는 무엇일까. 이는 남편 김동환의 사상적 입장에 대한 해명임과 동시에, 친일-좌익(문학가동맹)-부역문인으로 낙인찍힌 자신의 행위에 대한 변명과 면죄부를 받기 위해서이다. 남편의 생명을 부지시키기 위해 아내로서 하지 않으면 안 될 행위였다는 식의 `불가피성`의 논리가 그것이다. 문학가동맹의 가입도 객관정세와 남편의 구명을 위한 미봉책으로 어쩔 수 없이 선택한 행위였고, 잔류하게 된 이유 역시 남편이자 아이의 아버지에 대한 기다림 때문이라는 것이다. 이후 최정희는 자신의 과거의 행적을 무마하기 위해 종군작가단에 가입했고, 다른 이들보다 더 소리 높여 반공을 부르짖으며 맹세한다. 따라서 이후 발표된 그녀의 소설들은 모두 반공서사라는 틀 속에 포획되고 만다. 이는 해방기 생존의 논리로 선택한 반공 이념이 한국전쟁을 거치면서 자신의 소설적 기반으로 자리잡게 되는 과정을 보여준다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 결국 최정희 소설에 나타난 `전쟁`은 등장인물들의 일상과 정신을 송두리째 변화, 굴절시키는 일종의 폭력으로 드러난다. 전쟁 초기 피학적인 객체였던 인물들은 후기로 갈수록 반공이념을 가시화하며 전쟁에 적극 가담하는 주체적 인물로 변모한다.
This study is for investigating the meaning of war in Choi Jung-Hee`s 1950s~1960s novels. After liberation, she publishes autobiographic novels including Preface of Tangum, and long novels including Green Door, Endless Romance, History of Men and so on. Preface of Tangum is a serial novel consisted of 9 shore novels. This work is a autobiographic novel in which her daily life with Kim Dong-Whan in Dok-so and the war experienced by her after that time are entirely comprised. Through this work, Choi Jung-Hee records and arranges without any omission how the liberation and war reorganize and destruct her life. So, why does Choi Jung-Hee repeatedly narrate her situation of those days making her real name a subject of discussion through ten and some novels, diaries, and autobiographic novels? It is for excusing herself for her acts branded as a pro-Japan writer -left writer(the League of Writers) －compulsory labor writer as well as explaining her husband, Kim Dong-whan`s ideological position. Her logic is an `inevitability` one in which she is compelled to do the acts in order to keep up husband`s life. The reason of joining the League of Writers is explained to be an inevitable act as a makeshift for the objective situation and the lifesaving of husband and the reason of staying behind is explained to be an act for waiting for husband, children`s father. It is a sophistry in which she just tries to defend her family as a much-feared, feeble woman in the face of gigantic waves of war. After that time, she joins the Group of War Writers in order to cover her past act and deed and cries more loudly for anti-Communism than others. So, all her novels published after that time are confined into a formular as anti-Communism narrative. The process reveals how the anti-communism chosen for survival during liberation period forms the foundation of her novels under the Korean War, which we should notice. After all, `war` in Choi Jung-Hee`s novels is a kind of violence under which the daily life and the spirits of characters are all changed and bent. In other words, the characters as masochistic objects in the beginning of war are changed into subjective ones who are positively engaged in war, making anti-Communism visible in the late stage of war.
