범주/부류/유형은 인간의 인지 체계에서 매우 중요한 역할을 해 왔다. 언어와 관련하여 인간이 범주화를 하는 양상은 인간의 인지 체계에도 중대한 함의를 지닐 수 있다. 분절적 지각 현상과 Labov의 실험 등이 그러한 통찰을 제공해 줄 수 있다. 언어학자들이 언어를 분류하는 일은 19세기의 형태론적 유형론에서 큰 결실을 맺었으며, 현대 언어유형론에서도 특정 언어 특성에 따른 언어 분류 및 언어 특성의 지리적 분포에 대해 활발히 연구하고 있다. 언어 요소는 다양한 기준에 따라 분류될 수 있으나, 분포에 입각한 단어 분류, 즉 품사 분류가 언어학자들의 주된 관심의 대상이 되어 왔다. 분포에 의한 단어 분류와 기능에 의한 단어 분류가 맞물려서 어떠한 교차 분류 체계를 낳는지 앞으로 더 고찰할 필요가 있다.
The category/class/type plays an important role in human cognitive system. The way humans categorize with respect to language, e.g. categorical perception and Labov`s experiment, can shed light on questions of general cognition. Linguists` classification of languages resulted in the so-called morphological typology in 19th century. Modern typologists classify languages mainly on the basis of particular linguistic properties. They also study the geographical distribution of these properties. Linguistic elements can be classified on the basis of various criteria. But especially the classification of words on the basis of distribution, i.e. parts-of-speech has been the main focus. Classification of word in terms of distribution and in terms of function can result in massive cross-classification of words. This aspect needs to be studied more extensively.
