중국에서는 1966년부터 1976년까지 약 10년에 걸쳐 문화대혁명이 진행되었고 그 시기동안 모든 문화예술 작품은 8개의 ‘혁명 모범극(Revolutionary Model Plays)’으로 통합되어 공연되었다. 이 중 두 개의 작품이 발레였으며, 하나는 베이징에서 초연된 <붉은 여군(The Red Detachment of Women)>이고 다른 하나는 상하이에서 초연된 <백모녀(The White-haired Girl)>였다. 이들 발레 작품은 문화대혁명이 시작된 1966년 이전에 초연되었으나 문화대혁명 기간 동안 수정 과정을 거치면서 중국 인민들을 교육하는 ‘혁명 모범극’으로 재탄생하게 되었다. 문화대혁명 기간 중의 예술 창작이란 계층 간의 갈등 표출을 바탕으로 옛 것을 부정하고 새로운 혁명적 사상을 선전하는 또 다른 정치적 활동이었다. 당시 중국 혁명의 지도자인 마오쩌둥의 부인 장칭은 <붉은 여군>과 <백모녀> 두 발레 작품의 수정 과정에 직접 참여하였으며, 이는 결국 두 발레 작품이 정치적인 ‘모범극’으로서 재탄생하게 되는 계기가 되었다. 본 논문은 문화대혁명 기간 동안 진행된 두 발레 작품의 변화를 살펴보고 당시 매체들에 보도된 기사 등을 통해 장칭이 독재적으로 주도한 작품수정 과정 및 이를 통한 작품의 경직화 현상 등을 살펴보고, 나아가 이들이 중국의 무용 역사상 갖는 의의 등을 살펴보았다.

In China, about for 10 years from 1966 until 1976, the Great Cultural Revolution went on. During that time, all artistic works were integrated as 8 Revolutionary Model Plays and performed. Of them, two works were ballets. One is The Red Detachment of Women, the first performance in Beijing and another is The White-haired Girl, the first performance in Shanghai. These ballet works had been premiered beforet the Great Cultural Revolution was started in 1966 but through several revision during the Great Cultural Revolution, they were recreated as `Revolutionary Model Plays` for the purpose to educate Chinese people. Art creation during the Great Cultural Revolution, it was another political activity for negating the old things and instigating the revolutionary ideology, based on the class conflicts. At that time, Chiang Ching the wife of Mao Ze-dong, the leader of the Chinese Revolution, actively involved in revision of two ballet works, The Red Detachment of Women and The White-haired Girl. So it served as a momentum for the rebirth of two ballet works, changed into political "model plays". In this paper, it explored the change of two ballet works during the Great Cultural Revolution. And through the news aticles which were reported in mass media at that time, it investigated how Chiang Ching took a initiative participation in revision dictorially and how the dance works became rigid gradually, and furthermore this paper tried to examine the significance meaning in History of Dance in China.
