본 논문은 민족적 정체성에 기반하고 있는 조직들의 정치적 공간이 어떻게 잠재적으로 코리안 아메리칸의 1.5세대와 2세대에서 초국적 정체성을 형성시키는지를 연구하였다. 초국적 정체성 형성에 있어서 ‘동화’의 강한 힘이 작용하고 있음에도, 본 연구자가 수행한 KIWA와 KYCC와의 인터뷰에서는 CBOs의 다른 정치적 문화들이 경계를 가로지르는 의식이나 멤버십의 실천을 촉진 혹은 방해하는데 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 본 연구에서는 초국적 정치의식의 지역-민족적 뿌리를 이해하는 데 있어서 멤버십의 정치적 궤적들, 민족적 정치적 연대의 조직적 틀, 이들을 지지하는 네트워크의 전략적 가치에 주목하였다.

The paper looks at how the political spaces of ethnic community-based organizations can potentially encourage the formation of transnational identity formation among 1.5 and 2nd generation Korean Americans. Although strong forces of “assimilation” may work against transnational identity formation, my interviews with KIWA and KYCC affiliates indicate that the differential political cultures of CBOs may play a key role in either facilitating or impeding on the border-crossing consciousness and practices of their membership. In particular, I look at the political trajectories of the membership, the organization`s framework of ethnic political solidarity, and the strategic value of its support networks in understanding the “geo-ethnic” roots of transnational political consciousness.
