오늘날 현대 패션디자인에서는 현대적인 것과 더불어 전통의 수용 문제가 자주 제기되곤 한다. 현대 패션디자인은 심미적 가치를 창조하는 조형 예술의 한 분야로서, 다양한 표현양식과 소재선택으로 많은 변화와 발전을 이룩하게 되었다. 특히, 현대의 여러 예술장르 속에서 패션디자인의 발달은 디자이너의 감각과 감정에 있어 새로운 영역을 창조하는 계기를 이루었을 뿐만 아니라, 현대 패션디자인의 진로와 선택 역시 전통의 계승과 발전 사이에서 이루어지고 있다. 벽화는 시간적·공간적 개념을 뛰어넘은 예술의 원초적 특징을 나타냄으로써 그 현대적 수용이 가능하다. 이에 본 연구는 현대 패션디자인에 있어서 전통의 현대적 수용이라는 문제를 고구려 고분벽화에서 나타나는 조형적 특징을 중심으로 연구하였다. 고구려 고분벽화는 그 당시의 시대 상황을 밝히는 중요한 기록화인 동시에 미술사 적으로 소중한 가치를 지니고 있다. 또한 벽화에서 보여 지는 여러 가지 문양과 기법들은 한국 문양의 기원과 미술양식의 변천사를 제시해주는 중요한 유물인 것이다. 이는 고대 한국사회의 문화와 예술, 종교와 사상 등을 보여주는 자료로서 지금까지 우리의 문양 연구에 중요한 역할을 담당해 왔다. 이에 본 연구에서는 고구려 고분벽화에서 나타나는 인물의 복장과 문양을 중심으로 고구려 복식 및 복식에 반영될 장식문양을 고증·재현함으로써, 우리 한국전통의상의 정체성을 밝히고, 한국 의상의 세계화를 위한 토대를 마련하고자 한다.

Today, in modern fashion design the issue of creating new and accommodating tradition is often brought up. Modern fashion design is a part of formative arts that has been transformed and developed through diverse styles of expression and choices of materials. Especially, it is because the development of fashion design, among many different art genres, not only gives designers chances to create a new field but also finds its future and decision by carrying and developing the tradition. Murals can be adapted by modern arts because they capture the basic elements of arts over time and space. Accordingly, this research is conducted on the accommodation of the tradition in modern fashion design through studying the characteristics of ancient Goguryeo tomb murals. The ancient Goguryeo tomb murals are an important record of the period and have great value in the history of art. Also, the different patterns and techniques are valuable historical evidences that present the origin of Korean traditional patterns and changes in artistic styles. As the resource that reveals ancient Korean arts, religions, and ideas the murals have played an important roll in the study of the patterns. Thus, this study hopes to define the identity of Korean traditional costume and build the foundation for globalizing Korean costume by historical investigation and reproduction of Goguryeo costume and patterns focused on the ancient Goguryeo tomb murals`.
