본 연구에서는 초등학교 학생들의 철자 특성을 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 자소-음소 대응관계가 투명한 규칙 단어와 음운변동이 적용되는 단어로 철자 검사를 구성하여 초등학생 1~6학년 총 1,294명(일반학생 1004명, 철자부진학생 290명)의 학생을 대상으로 평가를 실시한 후, 학년에 따른 규칙 단어 및 음운변동 별 철자 발달 패턴과 철자 과정에서 산출된 오류를 살펴보고자 하였다. 주요 연구 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 전체 철자검사 결과, 1학년부터 3학년 까지 유의한 발달 패턴을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 철자 과정에서 산출된 오류를 분석한 결과, 표기처리 오류가 가장 높게 나타났고, 음운처리 오류가 그 다음으로 높게 나타났고, 형태처리 오류와 음운 또는 표기처리 오류가 그 뒤를 이었다. 셋째, 음운처리 오류에서는 무의미 단어로의 변환 오류가 다른 의미 단어로의 대치 오류 보다 높게 나타났다. 표기처리 오류에서는 같은 소리로 대치하는 오류가 가장 높게 나타났으며, 전체 단어를 소리대로 표기하는 오류가 그 뒤를 이었다. 형태처리 오류에서는 시제 선어말 어미의 오류가 가장 높게 나타났으며, 어간과 어미(또는 어근과 접사)의 구분을 제대로 하지 못하는 오류가 그 다음으로 높게 나타났다. 이와 같은 연구 결과를 토대로 한글의 철자 발달 특성을 논의하였다.

The purpose of this study was two-fold: (1) to compare the developmental patterns of elementary students in spelling accuracy and (2) to examine the types of errors and their frequencies. A total of 1,294 elementary students(1004 normal-achieving students and 290 low-achieving students) participated in the spelling test consisting of both regular words and phonological change words. Major results are summed up as follows. First, spelling accuracy results showed significant differences in the spelling test by the grade level. Second, as for the rates of spelling errors, the orthographic processing errors were highest, followed by the phonological processing errors and morphological processing errors. Based on such results, the characteristics of orthographically transparent Hangul and its implications for elementary students were discussed.
