본 논문의 목적은 유행처럼 사용되고 있는 영성이라는 용어의 의미를 바로 이해하여 영적훈련 모델과 방향성을 제시하기 위한 것이다. 시대별로 그리고 기독교 전통 안에서 다양하게 나타나고 있는 영성의 의미를 살펴보면서, 영성이 존재론적 측면에서 본 영성과 경험론적 측면에서 이해한 두 접근방법으로 논의되고 있음을 지적하고 있다. 본 논문은 기독교 영성 이해는 기독교 인간관을 바로 이해할 때에 형성될 수 있는 것이며, 이는 하나님의 은혜의 원리를 이해할 때만이 바로 이루어지며, 세속적 영성 이해의 한계를 극복할 수 있게 한다는 것을 역설하고 있다. 기독교 전통 안에서 뿐 아니라 진보하는 과학문명과 세속주의 상황에서도 영적 가치는 절대적이라는 것을 논의하고 있다. 본 논문은 영적훈련의 특성과 실천적 과제로 하나님의 사역으로서의 영적훈련, 정체성 회복으로서의 영적훈련, 하나님 경험으로서의 영적훈련, 통적적 삶의 회복으로서의 영적훈련을 제시하고 있다. 영적훈련은 하나님의 은혜에 기초하여 오직 하나님께서 우리에게 행하시는 사역임을 인정하고 행해져야 한다. 또한 우리의 정체성을 혼란스럽게 하는 사회 속에서도 우리를 보배롭게 여기시며 구원하시고 돌보시는 하나님을 믿음으로 세상에 의해 억압 받는 것이 아니라 세상을 이겨나갈 수 있는 자존감을 회복하게 하는 것이다. 그리고 나 자신과의 관계를 회복할 뿐만 아니라 하나님과의 관계를 회복하게 하는 것이다. 이와 관련하여 실제적으로 자본주의 사회를 살아가고 있는 현대인에게 돈의 문제 즉 돈의 우상성을 직시하게 하고 이의 파괴성과 지배성을 강조해야만 한다는 것이다. 더 나아가 기독교적 영적훈련은 기독교적 인간관은 개인주의적이 아니라 관계적이고 공동체적이라는 점을 강조해야 한다는 것이다. 따라서 기독교 영적훈련의 궁극적 목적은 그리스도인들이 자신의 고통에서 나와서 다른 이의 고통 속으로 들어갈 수 있게 하는 것이다.

This article is to articulate the term `spirituality` which prevails throughout our culture and gives some suggestions for spiritual models and directions. Exploring various meanings of spirituality that have been understood in each era and Christian tradition, it shows that spirituality is understood in two approaches: existential understanding and experiential understanding. This article emphasizes the right understanding of the Christian view of human beings and God`s grace and this enables us to overcome the limitation of secular understanding of spirituality. It discusses the importance of spiritual value which impacts not only Christian tradition but also advanced technology and secular society. Finally, it draws attention to four suggestions for characteristics and tasks of spiritual model and discipline: God`s praxis, restoration of self-identity, experiencing God and living in wholeness. It is to admit that spiritual discipline is God`s work. It is to restore self-esteem, by believing in a God who cares and saves us, by which we can influence the world but not to be influenced by the world. It is to restore the relationship with God as well as with oneself. For this, the idolatry of money should be warned of its destructive and ruling power to people who live in the capitalistic society. Furthermore, it ought to stress that the Christian view of human beings should not be individualistic but relational and communal. Thus the ultimate task for spiritual discipline is to enable Christians to come out of their own pain and go into the pain of others.
