오늘날 조선시대의 역사를 전체적으로 돌이켜 볼 때, 삼봉 정도전 만큼 많은 영향력을 미친 사람은 거의 없을 것이다. 정도전의 `혁명사상`은 조선왕조건국의 이론적 근거를 제공하였으며, 또한 조선왕조의 건국과정 그 자체가 그러한 혁명 사상에 의하여 진행되기도 하였다. 본 연구에서 살펴본 바에 의하면, 정도전의 통치사상은 철저한 `민본정신`을 바탕으로 하고 있으며, 군주는 국가에 의존하고, 국가는 백성(民 )에 의존한다. 그러므로, 백성은 국가의 근본인 동시에 `군주의 하늘`이라는 것이다. 따라서 군주는 자기보다 우위에 있는 `하늘`=`민`을 극진히 존중하고, 사랑해야 할 의무가 있는 것이다. 정도전의 혁명사상에 의하면 통치권은 천명(天命)과 천공(天工), 천리(天理)에 의하여 부여되고, 합리화되는 것으로서 천명이 떠나면 통치권은 소멸된다. 따라서, 유덕자에게 천명이 옮아가서 그가 새로운 통치자로서 통치권을 부여 받는다고 본다. 이러한 측면에서 볼 때, 조선이라는 새왕조의 건국은 본질적인 면에 있어서, 이성계 세력의 무력적 위압속에서 이루어진 것이기는 하지만, 우리나라 왕조 교체사상 최초의 일이며, 또 그것을 실현시킨 사상적 기초는 정도전의 `민본사상`과 `혁명사상`인 것이었다. 이러한 정도전의 민본주의, 역성혁명주의, 통치권의 정당성은 모두 민심에서 나오기 때문에 통치자에게는 백성을 사랑하고, 위하고, 보호하고, 존중해야 한다는 도덕규범이 요청되어 지는 것이다. 따라서, 정도전의 통치사상은 백성이 국가의 근본이며, 민심을 얻는 `인정`은 곧 `덕치`인 것이며, 가장 중요한 통치수단인 것이다. 이와 같이, 정도전의 통치사상은 철저한 `민본·애민정신`을 바탕으로 하고 있다. 결론적으로 볼 때, 군주나 관리는 백성을 지배하는 권력자가 아니라, 백성을 위해서 일하는 봉사자라는 것이다. 따라서, 오늘날의 통치자에게도 요구되는 도덕규범은 국민이 나라의 근본이므로 국민을 사랑하고, 위하고, 보호하고, 존중해야 한다는 것을 명심해야 할 것이다. 이런 측면에서, 정도전의 통치사상은 정치가나 행정관료들이 본받아야 할 점이 많이 있다는 것을 시사해 주는 것이다.

Looking back on the entire history of the Chosun dynasty, few people exerted more influence on the Chosun dynasty than Sambong Jeong Do-jeon. His revolutionary ideas provided a theoretical basis for the establishment of the Chosun dynasty, and the process of establishment of the Chosun dynasty itself proceeded following such ideas. Jeong Do-jeon`s ideas of ruling are based on a belief that the people should be valued most in ruling a nation. The belief holds that a ruler depends on his nation which depends on its people. This means that the people is both the basis of the nation and heaven the ruler should follow. Therefore, the ruler is required to dearly respect and love heaven which represents the people. According to Jeong Do-jeon`s revolutionary ideas, a ruler`s right to rule is granted and justified by `Cheonmyeong` `Cheongong` and `Cheolli`. If `Cheonmyeong` is withdrawn, the ruler`s right to rule will be terminated, and a new virtuous ruler who has been newly chosen by `Cheonmyeong` will be given the right to rule. In this regard, although the establishment of the Chosun dynasty was essentially carried out by Lee Seong-gye and his followers who used military forces to threaten those loyal to the Goryeo dynasty, its theoretical bases were Jeong Do-jeon`s revolutionary ideas and belief that the people should be valued most in ruling a nation. As Jeong Do-jeon`s ideas that value the people most in the ruling, Yeokseong revolutionism and the legitimacy of the right to rule all originate from the mind of the people, the ruler is required to follow moral norms that tell him to love, protect and respect his people. In conclusion, ideas of ruling are based on the belief that the people should be valued most in ruling a nation. It should be noted that such belief and the idea that the ruling should benefit the people can suggest lots of things to politicians today.
