Background Aims: The relationship between depressive mood and functional gastrointestinal disorder is controversial. The aim of this study was to first assess the association between subjective depressive mood and functional gastrointestinal disorders based on ROME III criteria. Methods: From December 2006 to May 2007, 272 subjects who completed a questionnaire on Beck`s depressive inventory and ROME III criteria survey in Konkuk university hospital were included in the study. All the subjects underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy to exclude organic disease. A 36-item Short Form general health survey (SF-36), a self-administered questionnaire to assess quality of life, was required at baseline. Thirty two subjects were excluded after examinations due to the presence of symptomatic gastrointestinal lesions or incomplete study (Fig. 1). Results: Of 240 subjects, 66 subjects had functional dyspepsia and 108 subjects had irritable bowel disease (61 diarrhea dominant, 15 constipation dominant, 31 mixed, and 1 unclassified types). On Beck`s depressive inventory, 50 subjects showed depressive tendency. Depressive tendency was related with functional dyspepsia (p=0.004) but not with irritable bowel syndrome (p=0.129). SF-36 domains were significantly related with the presence of functional gastrointestinal disorders (Table 1). Conclusions: Depressive tendency was significantly related with functional dyspepsia but not with irritable bowel syndrome in ROME III criteria. Diagnosis of functional dyspepsia by ROME III criteria suggests a higher tendency of depressive mood.
