오늘날 화예디자인의 작업 양상은 과거의 기능적, 장식적 성격의 작업으로부터 점차 디자인과 독립적인 조형예술로서의 작업으로 그 성격이 분화 발전해오고 있다. 따라서 화예디자인이라는 어휘가 통칭하는 작업의 범위 또한 예술로서의 화예와 디자인 작업으로서의 화훼디자인을 모두 포함하는 것으로 보아야 한다. 한편 예술로서의 화예와 디자인작업으로서의 화훼디자인은 작업의 개념과 성격이 크게 다르기 때문에 전개 방법에 있어서나 교육방법에 있어서 각기 서로 다른 접근이 요구됨에도 불구하고 오늘날 화예디자인이라는 범주 안에서 행해지는 창작 행위나 교육행위 가운데는 이와 같은 차이점에 대한 인식 없이 행해지는 경우를 발견할 수 있다. 이러한 개념과 방법의 혼재는 예술로서의 화예에 있어서나 디자인으로서의 화훼디자인 모두에게 있어서 각각의 특성과 가치에 맞는 기준의 확립과 방법의 개발을 혼란스럽게 하는 것이 될 수 있다. 이에 본고에서는 화예디자인으로 통칭되는 범위 안에서 행해지는 화예 작업과 화훼디자인 작업의 차이점을 접근 방법의 차이를 통해 파악하여 보았다. 방법적으로는 일반 적인 예술창작 프로세스와 디자인 프로세스의 비교분석을 통해 각각을 화예 작업과 화훼디자인 작업의 프로세스에서 나타나는 특징과 그 성격이 일치하는지를 확인하여 봄으로써 화예디자인이라는 범주 안에 예술로서의 화예와 디자인 작업으로서의 화훼디자인을 구분되는 서로 다른 분야가 존재함을 입증하였으며 분야별로 서로 다른 작품 창작 접근 방법, 비평 기준, 교육방법의 개발이 필요함을 밝혔다.

The scope of floral art and design today has expanded itself to the extend covering from functional and decorative role to independent art work as a fine art. As the approach and developing procedure for design and fine art are quite different, there should be clear understanding of the differences. And also different methodology should be applied in creation/education between flower design and floral art. Therefore I tried to make clear these differences by comparing various process of design and art, and further examined these differences found in the process of flower design and floral art in the same way. Finally I tried to clarify that there are two different areas in floral art and design which need different approach methods, critical criteria, and educational methodologies.
