The polyethylene (PE) hollow fiber membrane was modified by radiation-induced grafting of acrylonitrile (AN) and subsequent amidoximation of cyano groups of poly(AN) graft chains to introduce amidoxime group (AO) on the graft chains. The PE hollow fiber membranes were also modified by radiation-induced grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), and subsequent iminodiacetation and amination of epoxy group of poly(GMA) grafts chains, respectively, to introduce iminodiacetic acid (IDA) and diethylene triamine (DETA) on the graft chains. The adsorption characteristics of UO_2^2+ and Cu^2+ on the modified PE membranes were examined by permeation experiments through the modified PE membranes. The adsorbed amount of UO_2^2+ on the modified PE membrane with the AO group increased by increasing the content of AO group. The adsorbed amount of Cu^2+ on the modified PE membrane with the AO group was small, whereas the adsorbed amount of Cu^2+ on the modified PE membrane with the IDA and DETA groups was higher than that of UO_2^2+. The adsorption of UO_2^2+ on the PE membrane with the AO, IDA and DETA group was in the following order; AO group $gt; IDA group $gt; DETA group, while the adsorption of Cu^2+ on the modified PE membrane was in the following order: IDA group $gt; DETA group $gt; AO group.
