BRAIN-C Program is a fundamental research program to support entrained-bed gasification projects in Japan. This program started in 1995 and will finish on March 2005. The objective is to achieve substantial cut-down both in the developing period and in the cost during scale-up period. For this purpose, it was thought essential to establish a reliable simulation code based on fundamental understanding of coal itself and the behavior of coal at various stages of gasification. The project team is divided into several working groups, including "Simulation", "Database", "Coal Property", "Trace Element", "Devolatilization", "Char Reactivity", `Ash Behavior", and "Standard Coal Bank". Based on the achievement of each working group, we developed a new simulation code that may be applied to a wide range of coal utilization processes. In this review, the outline of this program. together with several important findings in each working group, will be introduced.
