유교에서는 사람이 本來性을 실현하는 능력과 하늘로부터 받은 밝은 德을 다시 밝힐 수 있는 능력을 구비했다고 본다. 이는 천부적인 인간성자체에 대한 신뢰감이 밑바탕에 깔려 있기 때문이다. 이러한 바탕에서 浩然之氣를 잘 기르면 인간의 본성이 잘 실현될 것이다. 浩然之氣는 사람의 내면에 본래 들어있는 義와 道를 쌓아감으로써 天地 氣運과 내 氣運이 일치되는 지극히 크고 굽혀 흔들릴 수 없는 올곧은 도덕적 기개 또는 인간의 본래 모습을 실현할 수 있는 당당하고 浩然한 기운을 말한다. 그런데 인간은 이기적 욕심이 개입되면서 天地의 기운에서 이탈하게 되었고, 이기적인 욕심에 자신을 가두어버림으로써 天地와 同流할 수 있는 통로를 막아버렸다. 따라서 天地와 同流하고 天地의 기운대로 삶을 영위할 수 있도록 하기 위해서는 곧은 마음의 상태를 단절시키고 歪曲시키는 이기적 욕심을 버리고 本性대로 感情이 곧게 나오도록 길러야 한다. 또한 타고난 差惡之心을 기르고 義로운 일을 끊임없이 추구해야 하며, 아침에 고요히 일어나 동쪽을 향해 앉아 夜氣가 낮에도 계속 지속되도록 마음을 가다듬어야 한다. 이렇게 하여 호연지기를 잘 기르면 不動心의 삶을 영위할 수 있게 되고, 인간 본래의 모습에 가장 충실한 바르고 참다운 삶을 살 수 있게 되며, 하늘과 하나가 되는 天人合一의 크고 위대한 삶을 영위할 수 있게 된다. 요컨대 浩然之氣는 물질만능주의 풍조와 목표 달성을 위해 수단과 방법을 가리지 말 것을 강요하는 등 도덕 불감증이 만연한 우리 사회에 진정으로 필요한 도덕적 기개이며, 이러한 至大至剛한 기상을 가진 大人은 이 시대 知性人들이 마땅히 지향해야 할 인물상으로 손색이 없을 것으로 사료된다.
In Confucianism, it is seen that people have the ability coming true an essential character and the ability making dear again the bright goodness received from Heaven.This is because the belief about an inherent human nature itself is based on.In this nature, if we cultivate the vast-flowing spirit(浩然之氣) well, the character of men will come true well. It is said that the vast-flowing spirit is a grand and vast-flowing tendency coming true the very large and strong honest moral nature or men`s original image to be agreed with tendency(氣運) of Heaven and Earth and myself by cultivating justice and reason staying men`s inner. By the way, as men grow up, they became to break away from the tendency of Heaven and Earth because of the selfish greed. Also, as men shut themselves in the selfish greed, they blocked the way flowing along with Heaven and Earth. Therefore men must get rid of selfish greeds to become extinct and distorted their straight mind so that they can live their lives as tendency of Heaven and Earth and they can flow along with Heaven and Earth. Also men must bring up so as to come out straight feelings as their nature characters. Moreover, men must cultivate the born Dogakzisim and must keep on following up reasonable works. After men get up and sit down straight in the morning, they must gird themselves up against the east to be continued Quiet and dear energy of midnight(夜氣) even during days. In this way, if men cultivate the vast-flowing spirit, they can live their imperturbable mind(不動心) lives, men can live the most right and true lives as their original image, men can live their large and great lives of Cheoninhapil(天人合一) to become one with Heaven. In short, the vast-flowing spirit is the real necessary moral nature in our society that the moral frigidity emphasizes disregarding ways and means to achieve aims and trend of omnipotence materialism spreads widely. This great men of the biggest and strongest nature is considered being by no means inferior as the character that intellectuals of this age ought to intend.
