이 글은 자본주의 경제의 세계화를 정치경제학의 시각에서 산업경제의 단계와 지식경제의 단계로 나누어 고찰하는 것을 목표로 한다. 우선 상업의 `문명화작용`과 자본주의의 내재적 경향에 의해 세계 시장이 형성되는 과정을 변증법적으로 서술하고 지식경제의 발전에 따라 세계시장에서 나타나는 새로운 동향을 분석하고자 했다. 나아가 1970년대 이후 서독에서 진행된 세계시장 논쟁을 비판적으로 정리함과 아울러 지식기반경제의 발전에 따른 세계화의 새로운 질적 변화를 설명하고자 했다. 끝으로 세계화의 진전에 따른 국민국가의 위상변화에 관한 논쟁을 비판적으로 고찰하고 지식기반경제의 발전을 위한 국민국가의 역할 변화에 관한 시사점을 도출하고자 했다.

Based on the method of the Marx` political economy the globalization of the capitalist economy can be analysed as transforming from the phase in the industrial economy to the phase in the knowledge-based economy. The world market that had developed as a `relative world market`(Marx) through the `civilization effects of the commerce`(Marx) before the growth of the capitalist economy experienced a qualitative development through the expansion of the industrial revolution to the `modern world market`. The transformation of the capitalist economy to the knowledge-based economy has a corollary of the globalization of the R＆D activities that means a qualitatively new phase in the capitalist globalization. The discussions on the capitalist world market that happened since 1970s in West Germany is to be critically reviewed in oder to show that each participant at the discussions has his own version on the relation between the capitalist economy and the world market. To them all, however, is one thing common; they all forget the nature of the capital as an exploitative relation that makes it necessary to territorially divide the different nations. In the last chapter the long-standing discussions on the changing status of the nation states in the process of the globalization are to be critically reviewed and it is tried to show some implications about the strategic role of the nation state for the development of the knowledge-based economy.
