Since the 1980s, Joyce has been a frequent target of Poststructuralist criticism. It results from his experiments with words considered as shattering the belief in the lucidity of the sign. It is true his experiments allure Poststructuralist critics but critics have not identified his experiments as reflecting his experience of the colonized. Aiming to deconstruct the hegemonic centrality as well, they look over Joyce`s real experience and its resultant but suppressed longing to subvert imperialism, for Poststructuralism is a phenomenon produced by the process of self-questioning of Europeans as the former imperialists. Joyce lets Stephen dismantle the imperialist norm of history writing, even if mainly in his mind. His stream of consciousness shows that historical discourse is essentially an ideological elaboration. The imperialist notion of historical `fact,` as referring to the lucidity of the sign, is subverted to mean `never anything but an unformulated signified,` which was well expressed as `a riddling sentence to be woven and woven on the church`s loom.` It will necessitate endless interpretation, which may bring about the deferral of meaning. But what occurs at the moment of the deferral is not the ultimate absence of meaning but the possibility of meaning. By embodying his experience of the colonized, Joyce showed his search for a new meaning to displace the imperialistic and monolithic idea of history. Stephen was disputing Mr Deasy, for he stated that history was `the manifestation of God,` and asserted anti-Semitism as well as misogynist idea. In his face, Stephen opposed that God was `a shout in the street,` which symbolizes variance against such monolithic ideas. He suggested to reinstate the suppressed variance by subverting the dominant voice of God. Actually, he designated Mr Deasy`s `Per vias rectas` as the nightmare of history from which he was trying to awake. To conclude, Joyce tried to abrogate the monolithic idea of history, and instead, awake to variance, which can guarantee the new name of history.
