과학의 밭전에 따른 컴퓨터와 인터넷의 밭전은 메스커뮤니케이션 매체의 하나인 출판물의 디자인에도 많은 영향은 주었다. 특히 출판물의 디자인은 디자인의 영역 중에서도 가장 중요한 사회적 ·경제적 ·문화적 기능을 담당하게 되었다. 또한 출판디자인은 "기능주의"(functionalism)에서 "형식주의"(formalism)로 그리고 "모더니즘" (modernism)에서 "포스트모더니즘"(post-modernism)으로 점진적으로 이행되어 가고 있으며, 디자이너는 이러한 예술의 흐름을 인식차여야만 한다. 이에 본 연구는 출판디자인에 있어서 디자이너에게 형식주의와 포스트모더니즘을 보급하여 출판조형물을 디자인하는데 도움을 주기위해 시도된 것이다.
