현대의 그림책에서 그림은 더 이상 글의 내용을 보조하는 역할에 머물지 않고 글이 전달하는 이야기를 보완하거나 확장하거나 혹은 재창조하기도 한다. 성경 그림책의 그림은 어린이 독자에게 친숙한 이야기를 낯설게 하여 이야기를 생생하고 구체적으로 들려주며 더 나아가 익숙함 뒤에 숨겨져 있던 성경의 의미를 발견하도록 도와준다. 본 연구에서는 성경 그림책에서 가장 자주 다루어지는 주제인 창조이야기, 노아의 방주, 예수 탄생, 예수의 부활 이야기를 예로 들어 작가가 그림책의 시각적 표현을 통해 의미있는 거리두기와 성경의 본질적 의미 보존하기라는 두 가지 과업을 어떻게 수행하고 있는지를 비교·분석하였다. 각 이야기에서 중심이 된 이슈는 (1) 하나님은 시각적으로 묘사될 수 있는가? 그렇다면 어떻게 묘사될 수 있는가? (2) 노아의 방주이야기는 어떻게 구체적으로 묘사되는가? (3) 예수와 마리아의 인성과 신성은 어떻게 나타나는가? (4) 폭력적인 장면은 어느 정도까지 묘사될 수 있는가?였다.

The pictures in modern picture books do not exist primarily to assist storytelling. Rather, they are more likely to extend and recreate the meaning of text. Pictures in Bible picture books often have a part in the retelling of stories even though the text itself limits the extent to which the artist`s creativity can explore it. This paper deals with the ways in which the pictures defamiliarize the Biblical tales and at the same time retain the essential meaning of the stories. In order to do this, Bible picture books were collected and analyzed according to themes such as: (1) Genesis, (2) Noah`s Ark, (3) Christmas, and (4) the Easter story. Some issues raised by Bible picture books are discussed: (1) Can God be depicted in pictures? If so, how? (2) How can Noah`s Ark be retold in detail through pictures? (3) Should Mary and Jesus in the story of Christmas be sanctified? (4) To what extent should violence be illustrated to a children`s audience? This study concludes that, an in-depth multidisciplinary approach, framed within a Christian worldview, is needed to deal with the issues raised by Bible picture books.
