1992년 3월부터 1993년 4월까지 섬진강 상류 수계인 보성강과 주암댐 지역의 15개 지점에서 어류상을 조사하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. 전 조사지역에서 채집된 어류는 총 10과 30속종 3,845개체이었으며, 이 중에 12속 16종이 한국 특산종이었고, 잉어과(Cyprinidae)가 30종으로 70% 이상이었다. 2. 분포 지역별 우점종은 Zacco platypus로 15개사 지점 중 14개 지점에서 출현하였고, 개체수는 Zacco temminckii가 656개체로 17%를 차지하여 가장 많은 개체수가 확인되었다. 3. Hemiculter eigenmanni와 Carassius cuvieri가 처음으로 채집되었는데 주로 댐내에 서식하고 있었다. 4. 조사 지역 중에 보성강 상지류에서는 유수역을 선호하는 종들이 서식하고 있었으나 보성댐내에서 정수역을 선호하는 Hemibarbus labeo, Abbottina rivularis, Carassius cuvieri 등이 주로 출현하였고, 주암댐 지역에서도 유수역에 주로 서식하던 종들은 출현하지 않았거나, 개체수가 감소되었고 정수역을 선호하는 Hemiculter eigenmanni 등의 종들이 증가하였다.

The change of fish communities by the change of water ecosystem in the Posong river were investigated from 27 March, 1992 to 26 April, 1993. Total collected fishes were 10 families, 30 genera, 42 species or subspecies, 3,845 individuals including 30 species or subspecies of Cyprinidae, and among them 16 species were known as Korean endemic species. Hemiculter eigenmanni and Carassius cuvieri were collected in the present studied areas for the first time. In the Posong river, the fish fauna from running water (rotic zone) ecosystem was quite different from that of lake (lentic zone) ecosystem by the change of water ecosystem. The dominant species were Zacco platypus, Z. temmincki, Acheilognathus intermedia, A. koreensis in the collected area and the number of individuals.
