표상은 심리학 및 교육학에서 상당히 주목받고 있는 주제임에도 불구하고 그 의미는 대단히 모호하다. 연구자는 표상의 개념을 명확히 하기 위해서는 무엇보다도 표상과 혼용되곤 하는 상징 및 이미지가 표상과 어떻게 구분될 수 있는지를 밝히는 것이 필요하다고 보았다. 따라서 표상에 관한 문헌들로부터 표상, 상징, 이미지의 의미를 추출함으로써 표상을 정의하고자 하였다. 연구자는 이러한 정의 작업의 결과가 유아교육에 시사하는 바를 도출해 냄으로써 표상능력을 발달시키기 위한 교육이 어떤 면모를 지녀야 하는가를 논의하였다.

The purpose of this study is to define the term `representation`. Representation has long been a theme which has attracted many philosophers, psychologists, educators, and other scholars. Recently, it became quite an important focus in cognitive psychology and early childhood education. Its meaning, however, is very vague and even confusing. The researcher viewed such vagueness and confusion are a result of the lack of differentiation among related terms : representation, symbol, and image. Accordingly, the researcher has tried to define representation by differentiating it from the symbol and also from the image. As a result, the study provides the definitions of representation, symbol, image, and imitation. The study also presents a figure which illuminates the status and characteristics of each term. Finally the researcher discusses the educational implications of the present study.
