The purpose of this study was to investgate the relationship between the social behavior of preschool children during a free-play period in which they played with an adequate quantity of hollow and unit blocks, and during one in which they played with an inadequate quantity. The subjects, 12 boys and 12 girls, were observed in a preschool classroom. Social behavior was checked according to a checklist. The number of blocks suggested as adequate were 74 large hollow blocks and 276 unit blocks. Inadequate numbers were 20 large hollow blocks and 76 unit blocks. Quantitative analyses of the data employed Repeated Measures ANOVA. The findings are as follows: 1. The children engaged in more group play when they had adequate quantities of hollow blocks and more group play and solitary play when they had adequate quantities of unit blocks, throughout the free-play period. No difference according to gender was found in the children`s social behaviors. 2. When the children played with an inadequate number of blocks, they still appeared to be interested in play with the blocks; however, they smiled and talked less and less as the period progressed. No differences in social behavior according to gender were observed.
