본고는 문식성이란 단순하게 자소(字素)를 음소(音素)로, 음소를 자소로 바꿀 수 있는 능력이 아니라 글을 통하여 의미를 구성하고, 구성해 놓은 의미를 재구성하는 고도의 지적 활동 능력이라고 정의했다. 이와 관련하여, 먼저 문식성 관련 변인들을 밝히고, 아울러 최근 문식성 발달에 대한 관점의 변화와 그 관점들이 선호하는 문식성 지도의 방법들을 살펴 보았다. 그리고 각각의 문식성 지도 방법은 문식성 관련 변인들을 어떻게 수렴하고 있는지 살펴 봄으로써 우리 나라의 문식성 지도는 각 관점이 선호하는 극단적인 방법을 취할 것이 아니라 절충적인 방법을 취할 것을 주장했다.

This paper is an effort to seek effective teaching methods, of literacy for young children. For this, I firstly contrasted the traditional perspective, reading readiness and hierachical instruction, with emergent literacy, the perspective that is gaining influence on early reading and writing instruction. Secondly, I examined the cognitive variables in the process of reading and writing and the relationship between those variables and teaching approaches. Through this, the study concluded that literacy is a complex cognitive activity which is fostered interaction between adults and child. The children can be encouraged to develop their literacy in a more natural setting, but also through carefully planned instructions. We do not need to follow any extreme position traditional or emergent perspective - regarding educational support for literacy. Children need diverse paths to literacy.
