The pursposes of this study are (1) to investigate effective ways to carry out inservice education for teachers and supervisors in early childhood education, and (2) to suggest a tentative plan for major area of inservice education. Research questions are as follows : 1) How inservice education for early childhood teachers and supervisors is carried out in Korea, Japan, and the United States of America? 2) What do early childhood teachers and supervisors demand for inservice education? 3) What are the opinions and suggestions of early childhood professionals`about inservice education for early childhood teachers and supervisors? 4) What are the desirable ways to carry out inservice education for early childhood teachers and supervisors? According to the reaults of this study, a tentative plan for major area of inservice education was constructed and the following suggestions were drawn : 1) It might be necessary to examine the present system of in service education for renewing qualification of early childhood teachers. 2) It might be necessary to consolidate institutes of inservice education for early childhood teachers and supervisors. 3) The content of inservice education needs to be selected to attain the purpose of inservice education and to meet the demand of trainees. 4) The inservice education needs to be carried out in an appropriate form according to the content area. In addition, the level of experience and educational background of the trainees should be considered in grouping. 5) An appropriate time for inservice education for early childhood teacher is summer and winter vacation and those for supervisors is May or October. 6) It is desirable for inservice education to be carried out at least once or twice a year to update the quality of early childhood teacher and supervisors and to meet their needs. 7) An appropriate lecturer should be selected. 8) The result of inservice education should be carefully evaluated not by examination but by participation in activities, and those results of evaluation should be reflected in promotion or payment. 9) Financial aide from government and each institute needs to be provided for those who participate in inservice education away from home town. 10) Under the appropriate supervision, books and educational materials could be introduced and sold during inservice education period.
