The purpose of this sdudy is to examine the developmental patterns of the four year old Korean children. The subjects were 195 children who were randomly selected from 25 day care centers and 27 kindergartens. To examine the possible differences, the data were and compared by the sex , areas where they live, and types of the setting with dependent factor dimensions of language development, cognitive development, fine motor skills, social competence(social skills and social thinking), and preacademic skills. The major findings of the study are as follows: 1. There were significant differences in language development according to the type of setting. That is, children in the kindertens showed higher scores than children in the day care centers. 2. There were significant differences in cognitve development according to the types of setting. That is, children in the kindertens showed higher scores than children in the day care centers. 3. There were significant differences in fine motor skills according to the sex of children and the area where they live. That is, girls showed higher scores than boys. And children in the big cities showed higher scores than children in the small towns. 4. There were significant differences in overall preacademic skills according to the types of setting. That is, children in the kindertens showed higper scores than children in the day care centers. 5. There were significant differences in social skills and social thinking abilities according to the types of setting. That is, children in the kindertens showed higher scores than children in the day care centers.
