The purpose of this study is to investigate how Korean institutes for early childhood education (private kindergartens, public kindergartens, nurseries, and daycare centers) plan and manage children`s snack. For this purpose 600 institutes were randomly selected and investigated by questionnair. Of the all, 437 responded questionnairs, 377 questionnairs were analyzed. The results of this study are as follows : 1. Most of institutes provided children with snack 5 times a week. 2. The top three reasons for providing snack were (1) snack helps children`s growth and development ; (2) children enjoy snack ; and (3) snack refreshes children. Reasons for not providing snack everyday were (1) guiding table manners for lunch hour, (2) not enough time to carry on other activities, and (3) cost. 3. Many institutes set daily, weekly, or monthly schedule for snack while 29.25% of them did not. 4. When planning snack, references teachers used were availability of the purchase, reference books about nutrition, previous experience, and parents` opinion, and teachers` top three concern were children`s preference, calorie, and weather and /or season. 5. About half of teachers did not know appropriate amount of snack. 6. Snack was provided by fixed schedule in most institutes. 7. Most institutes provided snacks to children between 10 : 00 AM an 11 : 00 AM in half day program and after 3 : 00 PM in all day program. 8. Most popular snacks were milk, yokurt, (i.e. This is drfferent from Yogurt) pie, fruit, natural food, bread, cookie, cracker, donut, cake, rice cake, and sandwich. 9. Many institutes spent less than 200won for snack per child per each time. 10. Most institutes used personal dish to distribute solid snack while many of them used can or pack to distribute milk or drink instead of personal cup. 11. Most institutes guided for children to wash hands before snack, to eat a variety of food, to chew well, to sit in a correct posture, and to eat quietly. Most of them also allowed conversation with others during snack time. 12. Most institutes let children clean up tables, chairs, and floor after snack. 13. The most serious problem teachers have in planning and managing snack was that it is very difficult to select appropriate food with right amount since they have not had any chance to learn about snack before.
