The purpose of the study was to find the effect of teacher`s questioning on stimulating children`s ideas of residential space when they draw. The subjects were 103 five-year-old children from Seoul. Taeku, Kwangju, Incheon, Buyeo and Hongsung. The children were required to draw at two different times, in May and in November. The total number of drawings was 406. At first the teacher asked a question, such as, "Where would you like to live if you can live anyplace except your own home?" "Will you draw it for me?" After they drew the teacher asked one more question. "Why do you want to live there? Plaease tell me the reason. The children were given 12 different-colored crayons, 2 pieces of drawing papers, one a cirole 20cm in diameter and the other a rectangle 42 cmx 29cm, in the spring and in the autumn. The children`s pictures were analyzed according to the shapes of the drawing paper (circular and rectangular), seasons(spring and autumn), and the residential area of the children(city or country). In order to find the ability of the children to explain to explain their own drawings verbally, their pictures and their explanations of them were analyzed. x^2 was used. The following are the results. l. There was no sexual difference. 2. The shapes of the drawing paper influenced the hildren`s drawings. On the circular papers the children drew places where people can not live. More imagination was involved when they belly and inside mother`s arm. It is possible that the children felt free to draw more imaginative places. However, the children had a tendency to draw more closed spaces regardless of the shapes. 3. Seasons influenced children`s drawing. In the autumn they drew more natural spaces such as tree, cave, dirt, grass, seaside and flower. In the spring children drew spaces more often than in the autumn where people can live. 4. Children from big cities drew more natural spaces and spaces where people can not live. 5. City children can explain more clearly what they drew and in the fall semester more children could explain their drawings clearly. As a result of the study we found that children`s drawing is influenced by shapes of paper. seasons and the residential areas where they live. Children from small cities need more specific teaching methods in art. The opportunity to observe objects in detail, questions to stimulate imagination, discussion time to express their feelings and thinking are necessary to cultivate children`s ability to draw well.
