The purpose of this study was to design early childhood social education curriculum for undergraduate teacher education programs. The study was primarily dependent upon literature as a descriptive and analytic approach for its methodology. A number of approaches were undertaken such as inter-university comparison of scope, contents, teaching syllabus and analysis of current issues and problems in regard to early childhood social related subjects. The study was designed to come up with innovative recommendations conducive to development of more relevant social education curriculum for early childhood teacher education in Korea. The data for the study were collected through the review of literature and resources, personal letters from the professors who were teaching courses related to the topic, analysis of teacher education curriculum of 14 universities, interviews and analysis of questionnaires with 19 concerned professors in Korea. As a precondition of social education curriculum design a systematic and clearcut definition of the basic concepts and delimitation of scope of the contents should be established ; The major recommendations were as follows : 1) Social science subject courses for ECE teachers should be offered for them to understand child`s social environment as well as social phenomena in general. 2) The social education curriculum should have the specific contents on Korean tradition and culture. 3) Socialization and guidance of children, concepts of social sciences, and teaching process, etc., should be systematically planned in a coordinated manner. 4) Range and scope of the social education course should be integrated with these of other basic content areas, such as language, math, and sciences. 5) Various types of texts and resource materials should be offered to students, such as those related to inquiry method and values analysis. 6) Basic researches should be promoted in relation to socialization process of Korean children. 7) A variety of specific social education programs should be designed.
