This paper reports the progress of one effort to develop and validate an instrument that can be used to measure critical aspects of a parent`s attitudes and behavior that influence child development. The Korean Parent As A Teacher (KPAAT) is developed on the basis of PAAT by Robert Storm (1972). On the preliminary study 60 items on the tentative form of KPAAT were developed through the translation of PAAT (50 items) and addition of 10 items about children`s achievement motivation. The subjects of the study were 122 mothers with pre-schoolers in Pusan city and Kyung-sang-nam-do. The analysis of data was done with reference to factor analysis using oblique rotation and Cronbach`s α. The findings of the study were that (1) The factor structure extracted from the factor analysis was not appropriate. The controlled 7 factors accounted for 37% of the total common factor variance. (2) The total items` internal consistency was α = 69. The purpose of the main study was to correct the tentative form of KPAAT. 89 items on the KPAAT were derived from an extensive search of the literatures regarding parental influence upon child development and corrected to items of the tentative form of KPAAT. The subjects of the study were 191 mothers and fathers with preschoolers in Pusan city. In order to perform the factor analysis effectively, 89 items were arranged 17 areas with a range of 3- 8 sub-items on the basis of the results of factor analysis on the preliminary study and theoretical relativeness. 17 areas were examined with reference to their monogenity of item content. A factor analysis was performed on the 17 areas of the KPAAT using oblique rotation. Cronbach`s α for internal consistency of total items and subscales extracted from the factor analysis was performed. The major findings of the study were as follows: (1) The results of the item analysis, 17 areas of the KPAAT were acceptable. The correlations between areas and the total score were 15∼63 and between areas and each sub-items were 18∼77. (2) 6 factors were extracted from the factor analysis with 1.02∼4.09 eigin value, .10∼.72 of communality, and 62.4% of the total common factor variance. Factor I was composed of area 6, 12, indicating "encouragement of achievement of learning." Factor II was composed of area 3, 13, indicating "control and limitation." Factor III was composed of area 1, indicating "reponse to the child`s questions." Factor IV was composed of area 5, 7, 11, indicating "evaluation of child and support." Factor V was composed of area 2, 4, 10, 16, indicating "permisiveness of play." Factor VI was composed of area 9, 14, 15, 17, indicating "enhancement of creativity." Since the area 8 was not high loading at any 6 factors, it was excluded from the KPAAT, then total 85 sub-items of 16 areas on the KPAAT were determined lastly. (3) The Cronbach`s as of the final KPAAT (85 items) and 6 subscales were .93 and a range of 56-84, which were considered to be satisfactory.
