Since 1960s parent education in early childhood education programs has become a major issue for professional studies in the filed. This is a relatively new topic in early childhood education, an emerging field of study and practice in the Korean scene. In view of the fact that parent education is becoming increasingly a greater concern for professional scientific efforts, the present paper attempts to overview some historical progress of parent education, program evaluation project and two other programs. Two programs are MELD (Minnesota Early Learning Design for Growing Parents: Ann Ellwood) and HSI (the Home and School Institute: 101 Activities for Building More Effective School-Community Involvement: Dorothy Rich and Bevery Mattox). In addition, some evaluation in terms of its effectiveness is presented. Program evaluation project is presented in terms of an analysis of 28 programs as practiced in the United States. In the MELD program, parents were encouraged to involve and solve problems which they confronted with their children. The HSI program consisted of more practical and detailed activities, contributing to development of children. Taken as a whole, the following points were of particular note: 1) Parent involvement and parent education are to be differentiated and cooperative partnership between home and school should improve educational productivity; 2) There are various approaches to parent involvement with different philosophies, purposes and methods; 3) There are different alternatives in conducting methods even within the same program; 4) Evaluation is essential with particular emphasis upon analysis of specified activities in the curriculum; 5) Basic researches with particular emphasis upon indigenous conditions in Korea are needed; 6) In conducting researches special attention should be paid to differential variables of SES; 7) Attention should be given to cognitive, verbal, sensory-motor,and child-developmental aspects of the curriculum; and 8) Parenthood education with preventive perspectives for prospective parents should be recognized.
