The formation of the kindergarten education in Korea came during period of the Japanese colony. Before Japan annexed Korea, the Japanese ran kindergarten for their own children only. Since 1910 kindergarten for Korean children had been founded by missionary and Korean nationalists. At the earlier period there were a few kindergartens. But the growth in the kindergarten education had been rapidly made since the Samil independent movement. So there were some factors which brought such rapid growth of the early childhood education. The characteristics of the early childhood education at this stage can be summarized as the following: First, the kindergarten education was influenced by christianity. At the early stage most of the kindergarten were connected with church activities. Also they were influenced by the christian thought of human right. Second, the kindergarten education was pushed forward by the nationalistic movement. All Korean had a strong desire to restore their sovereignty by means of education for children. Third, the kindergarten education gave rise to Eurini movement. The patriotic movement and Eurini movement which intend to spread the children culture, in turn, brought the growth of the kindergarten, and also had a great influence upon the content of the kindergarten education. But, the kindergarten education at the early stage was lacking in obvious self-consciousness of its purpose and content based on the essence of the early childhood education.
