This experiment examined the relationship between item location anditem identity in a probe type taskwith fourth grade children. The stimuli cards were shown and placed down either from the left to theright of the subject in ordeo,or the start point on which the first card was placed down was selected randomly out of six serial position, or the cards were placed down in a random order. In each of the last two conditions, each location was probed three times regardless of the presented order in one group and each presented order was probed three times regardless of the located position in the ordergroup. The two groups probed in terms of location did not show any serial position effect while the two groups probed in terms of presentedorder showed serial position effects. It was concluded that iteminformation and location information were combined in terms of the presented order of the card rathr than in terms of the located position of the card in this probe type task.
