미국 국제개발처(USAID)는 미국부통령의 직접적인 관할에의해 운영되는 독립기관으로 미국의 해외경제원조 및 전세계 인류복지 향상등 대개도국 원조사업을 수행하고있는바 USAID의 주요활동 및 성과는 다음과 같다. 1. USAID는 J. F. 케네디 대통령의 세계개발정책에 따라 1961년 처음설립, 미국의 대외원조활동을 수행함. 2. 미국의 대외원조 정책 목표는 경제성장촉진, 지속적민주화추진, 각종 재해로부터 인류의 보호, 인류건강 증진 및 인구증가억제, 환경보호등 5가지임. 3. `96년 12월 현재 USAID의 원조 수혜국은 앙골라등 80개국으로 이들국가의 지원을 위한 `97년 원조예산은 약 68억 8천달라임. 4. USAID의 대의원조결과 국내의 새로운 직업창출과 경제발전은 물론 세계인류의 에이즈확산억제, 환경보존, 인구증가억제, 민주화촉진, 식량증산등 각종분야에서 커다란 기여를 하였슴. 5. 과거 USAID의 수혜국 지위에서 졸업한 국가는 우리나라, 스페인, 대만등 총 47개국임.

The purpose of the study is to analyze the current activities related to the foreign assistance program for the well-being of developing countries at the United States Agency for International Development(USAID). Since 1961, the USAID has carried out America`s economic and humanitarian assistance programs abroad. U.S. foreign assistance has always had the twofold purpose of furthering America`s foreign policy interests in expanding democracy and free markets while improving the lives of citizens in the developing world. For Fiscal Year 1997, a total of $6,882 million for USAID-administered programs are requested for budget. The FY 1997 USAID request includes funding for the Development Assistance Fund, Development Fund for Africa and etc. Presently, a total of 80 countries including Nepal and Peru, are the recipient of the USAID`s assistance. In total, 47 nations have "graduated" from U.S. assistance programs. South Korea, and "Taiwan are among the USAID`s graduates.
