관용표현이란, 필연적이지 않은, 관습적인 속성을 지니는 언어 표현을 말하는데, 이 관습성은 결합, 의미, 사용의 세 가지 측면에서 발현될 수 있으며, 이에 따라 연어, 숙어, 화용론적 관용표현을 구분할 수 있다. 숙어는 부분의 의미로부터 전체의 의미를 예측할 수 없는 불투명성을 지니는데, 이러한 불투명성은 비유에 의한 의미 확장이 단어 결합 전체에 걸쳐서 일어남으로써 생기는 일이 많다. 관용표현은 통사론적 행동이 자유롭지 못한 경우가 많은데, 이런 통사적 제약의 상상 부분은 정보 구조 내지 의미 구조에서 원인을 찾을 수 있다.

Conventional expressions are linguistic expressions which have non-necessary, i.e. conventional properties, which can be manifested in terms of combination, meaning or use. Using this criterion, conventional expressions are divided into collocations, idioms and pragmatic conventional expressions. Idioms are opaque in meaning in that their meaning cannot be predicted from the meanings of their parts. This opacity frequently arises from semantic extension by metaphor applied to the whole word combination. Conventional expressions tend to suffer severe syntactic constraints, which are usually due to semantic or informational structure.
