This thesis is to understand all aspects of poems by Baek-soek by studying how self-consciousness in the poems changes. Self in his poems has diverse aspects; the one under the protection of maternity during childhood and the one suffering from the absence of paternity. During childhood, the self is emotionally satisfied under maternity. native local foods are a medium through which the self of childhood discovers the protection of maternity and gains emotional satisfaction. As he grows up, he pursues paternity, free from maternity. However, due to the absence of paternity, he clashes with the outside world, which is described in the from of disruption of family. One of the important factors in forming the self is harmonious relationship with others. Facing a break of relationship with a loved one, he experiences existential agony in his adult age. The loved one failed to relieve him of such agony. The poetic self finds him frustrated after he has failed to fulfill his love and then, experiences a sense of isolation and seeks escape from the reality and seclusion. Therefore, to get out of these distresses, the self seeks to develop his identity by internalizing strong mentality. Internalization of strong will to live and glorious mentality leads to discovery of identity. For instance, `Nansinyeujoo Yudong Baksibongbang` is a poem in which the self in poems by Baek-soek discovers internal values and recover himself at the extremity of despair.
