고소설에는 환상적인 요소들이 많이 등장하는데, 고소설에서 흔히 나타나는 환상적인 이야기로는 도술, 도사 등으로 구성되는 도술담을 들 수 있다. 도술담이 풍부하게 구사되고 있는 고소설이 바로 <전우치전>이다. <전우치전>의 도술담이 보여주는 환상성에서는 설화적인 성격이 감지되는데, <전우치전>의 경우처럼 설화와 관련성이 있으며, 다수의 고소설 작품에 등장하는 `도술 이야기`의 환상성은 오히려 조선시대 민중들에게 폭넓게 향유되었던 미감일 수 있다는 점에 주목할 필요가 있다. 본 고의 목적은 고소설 작품 중 민중적인 환상성을 보여주는 <전우치전>이 지니는 미감의 특질을 분석하고 고찰하는 데에 있다. 논의의 대상으로 삼은 이 본은 일사본 <전우치전>이다. 전우치는 도술 습득 기간 없이 도술 능력을 얻고, 도술을 부리는 과정 역시 간단하게 그려지며, 일상적 공간에서 벌어지는 그의 도술 행위들은 비기계적인 연결로 전개된다. 그리고 주관적인 판단기준으로 도술능력을 사용하며, 정(情)에 이끌리는 전우치라는 인물은 선/악 구도를 벗어나 있는 주인공이다. 본고는 이같은 도술담의 전개 방식과 성격, 도술 주체의 인물 형상화 방식을 분석함으로써 <전우치전>의 환상성이 보여주는 미감이 역동적이며, 유희적이며, 원초적인 성격의 것임을 밝혔다. <전우치전>이 보여주는 이 같은 환상성은 민중적 환상성의 세계라 하겠다. 당대 소설 유통 상황을 고려해 볼 때, 고소설 향유층들이 광범위하게 즐겼을 환상은 <전우치전>의 환상과도 같은 것이었을 가능성이 높으며, <전우치전> 서사에서 보여주는 민중적 환상은 고소설의 환상성에 있어 고유한 미감 중 하나일 것으로 보인다.

There are many kinds of fantastic stories in the Korean old novels. Among those stories, we can meet magic stories frequently and is rich in magic stories. This work is similar to folk tales in some senses because it is originated from the folk tales called `Jeon-woo-chi stories`. The characteristics of fantasy in could be important on the point that the fantastic aesthetics of could be enjoyed more broadly and popularly by the lower class people than those of written in the Chinese characters. The magic stories in was developed episodically and the hero stepped aside the typical type of good/bad division. Owing to the episodic plot and various kinds of the magic stories and the character of the hero, the fantastic aesthetics of became dynamic, enjoyable and instinctive. Finally the fantastic aesthetics in was popular with the lower class in the Chosun dynasty.
