Containing vessels of today are mostly represented as the diversity of their types and the mass production on the basis of advanced technology, systematic process and thoroughgoing planning. However, there are some unique ways of production still remaining unchanged in some specific regions, which are persistently keeping old-fashioned, improvised, unplanned ways in a sort of subculture with a voluntary isolation from the domineering flow of mass production. And anyone can barely deny that bearing a wide range of utility and applicability, traditional vessels in vernacular design are still sharing codes and values of design and culture with new, modern, updated ones even under such a system-oriented structure as the ripe post-industrial society. This study, therefore, is to make sure the wide applicability of traditional vessels as packages and to draw a paradigm from their vernacular design definitely distinguished from most stereotyped ways by focusing on the package culture permeated in traditional vessels that had been manually produced before an automatized system was popularized and are still kneaded manually only by limited initiates. After a brief review on the definition and concept of vernacular design, this study develops into an empirical, simulating way of survey on selected samples of traditional vessels. The result briefly shows the general features of the traditional packages as follows: 1. Noticeably differentiated from massively recopying ways of design 2. Realizing usual ideas in habitual on spontaneous needs 3. Forming another firm axis on the opposite side of main culture and co-existing complementarily with it 4. Having strong points of swiftness and flexibility complementing the popularized systematic process 5. Working as utility storage utensils physically showing excellent ventilation and damp proof 6. Presenting potential alternatives for the eco-friendly design trend on the horizon 7. Having artistic merits and singularity cannot be expected from ready-made articles 8. Retaining so precious cultural values as showing identity of a nation and way of living The package culture reflected in vernacular designs deserves to be preserved as II" perpetual value giving life and humanity to the existing techo-oriented products and also shows the right way to a functional alternative meeting what the future designs need to equipped with.
