The purpose of study was conducted to elucidate the relationship between parents" verbal control modes and children`s self-esteem. The subjects of this study were 489 children composed of 216 boys and 271 girls of fifth and sixth grade in two elementary schools located in Taegu. The measurement instruments used in this study were "Parents` Verbal Control Modes" (Lee, Kyung Hee, 1993) and "Self-Esteem Inventory" (Coopersmith, 1981). The Canonical Correlation Analysis SAS (Statistical Analysis System)/pc program was employed to examine the correlation between the subtraits of parents` verbal control modes and the subtraits of childrens self-esteem. The major findings of this study were as follow 1. The subtraits of paternal verbal control mode was related to children`s self-esteem, especially imperative control variable in the subtraits of paternal verbal control mode revealed the greatest contribution for the prediction of home-parents variable in the subtraits of children`s self-esteem. 2. The subtracts of maternal verbal control mode was related to children`s self-esteem. especially person-oriented control variable in the subtracts of maternal verbal control mode revealed the greatest contribution for the prediction of home-parents variable in the subtracts of children`s self-esteem. 3. The relations between the subtracts of paternal verbal control mode and the subtracts of children`s self-esteem is different according to sex 4. The relations between the subtracts of maternal verbal control mode and the subtracts of children`s self-esteem is different according to sex.
