The purpose of this study was to compare the understanding degree for children`s story used some various communication methods. The subjects for the study were 45 preschool children(M age=5.1) and 45 first graders(M age=7.1) of an elementary school in Pohang City. They were divided in 6 groups based on the Chang-Young Ae`s(1981) linguistic-ability test scores and their age. Those groups were named the picture-story group, the picture and taped-story group and the story-only group in both 5-year and 7-year old group. The story used in the study is (Happy Birthday, Moon) which used the Lee`s test-tool(1983)based on the evaluation criteria of Anderson(1972) to measure the degree of understanding of the story. Three kinds of material were used and told the story to 6 sample groups divided, 12 questions were prepared for measuring the degree of understanding of children`s story and were tested just after finishing the story. The result of this study were as follows: 1) The story-anly method was the most effective for the first graders in the communication methods. 2) For preschool children, little statistic significance was shown in the given three methods. 3) Little statistic significance was shown between preschool children and the first grade students depending on communication methods with their age.
