Amid the bailout from International Monetary Fund (IMF) caused by the nation`s financial turmoil late last year, the necessity for increase of export of Korean products have become much more important than ever. For this effect, better competitiveness of Korean products shall be imperative and also unique korean identity has to be established in Korean product design field. And then, what`s the identity for Korean products in this age of the globalism and the internationalization. In order to suit the taste of the consumers who are well accustomed to the western culture and living style, we shall have to revive the uniqueness and the tradition of our own culture and modernize them in a way to promote Korean image in overseas export market. To be able to overcome the unlimited worldwide competition under the current WTO structure, it is required to inherit well our own traditional uniqueness and develop it. Particulary in field of the package of Korean traditional and tourism goods which we have neglected relatively with indifference and without appropriate planning, continuous research and study should be done for making the unique Korean goods worldwide recognizable by setting up a proper strategy of package design making the best use of the Korean traditional patterns. For this purpose, this study is to look into the practical application of Korean traditional patterns in package design with a view of assuring a superiority of the Korean goods and improving their competitiveness in overseas market.
