After the Blue and White of the Yuan and the Ming China was first introduced to Chosun, Chosun began to make its own Blue and White since the reign of King Sejo(1455-1468). But it cost too much to make the Blue and White due to the expensive pigment that had to be imported from China. The official painters who went to official Journey to Yenching had to act as the importers of pigment. At that time China also had to import cobalt material from Islam, which made the pigment`s price more expensive. Blue and White was used as the ritual and reception ware of gifts to the foreign representative rather that as the commodity. So their shape was formed after the metal ritual ware and Chinese ware. The styles` of Blue and White were divided into two; one was similar to the style of the Chinese Blue and White and the other was the unique Chosun style which emphasized the space and the painterly expressions. All of them showed the aesthetics and the sense of beauty that Chosun consumers had pursued. Owing to the fact that the official painters were responsible for the painting on the porcelain, the porcelain represented the contemporary painting. However, thanks to the solid body, the restricted range of color usage and the material different from paper of silk, the painting style of the Chosun Blue and White had its own unique beauty. The Blue and White took a role as the important data to know the contemporary painting style because of the scarcity of the painting during the early period. They are supposed to be used to examine the date of the introduction, the popularity of painting style, and the interaction between Chinese and Chosun painting. The bamboo, the pine tree and the plum blossom that symbolized the loyalty of the literatie, the dragon that represented the royals, the bird and flower, and the figure were painted. But the landscape and the folk-painting that became popular in the later period did not appear, which meant the narrow range of Blue and White`s consumers compared with that of the later period and the different taste. In conclusion the Blue and White of the early period of the Chosun was the high class luxury as well as the work of art that represented the beauty and aesthetics of Chosun.
