만성 전두동염(Chronic Frontal Sinusitis)의 염증성 진행에 의한 안구후 농양의 발생은 흔하지 않은 것으로 보고되어 있으며 특히 급성적인 안구 돌출과 안통을 유발하는 정도의 급속한 진행은 매우 드문 것으로 알려져 있다. 그러나 안통을 동반하는 급성의 안구 돌출이 만성적인 비염 혹은 부비동염을 동반한 환자에서 발생하였을 경우 이러한 염증의 진행에 의한 안구 주위의 농양 가능성을 의심하여야 하며 이비인후과적인 검사과정이 병행되어야 할 것이다. 저자들은 수일 만에 진행된 안구돌출과 안통을 주소로 내원한 27세의 여자 환자에서 컴퓨 터 단층촬영등을 시행하여 만성 전두동염에서 발생한 농양이 안와의 내상벽을 뚫고 안구후로 진행한 것을 발견하고 배액술과 더불어 이비인후과적 치료를 병행함으로써 좋은 결과를 얻었기에 보고하는 바이다(한안지 37:549∼553, 1996).

It is not common that formation of retrobulbar abscess by inflammatory spreading of chronic frontal sinusitis and even rare that the abscess cause acute exophthalmos and ocular pain. But, if the acute exophthalmos with ocular pain arise from the patient associated with chronic rhinitis or paranasal sinusitis, it should be suspected that peribulbar abscess was formed by spreading of these disease and otorhinologic examination should be taken. The authors experienced a case of acute exophthalmos with ocular pain in a 27-years old woman and founded that abscess arising from the chronic frontal sinusitis disrupted the superomedial wall of orbit and spread to the retrobulbar area by computed tomography and other radiologic evaluation. We had good result by performing incision and drainage and some otorhinologic therapy(J Korean Ophthalmol Soc 37:549∼553, 1996).
