Significance of Educational Thought in Mo Tzu`s Philosophy

This study is investigation of the philosophy of Mo Tzu who descended Neighboring Love to practice in the realms of educational ideals. The results from the research are the following. His ideas concerning education started from personal awareness which could be explained by the motto "from ignorant damage to advantageous awareness". His educational goal was establishing an united society by a wise man. By eliminating social conflict and irregularities, national stability is maintained and social happiness is improved. In order to achieve his educational goal, he thinks that the government should conduct clean politics. He demanded that the govenrment be administered by qualified men in positions of leadership. He insisted that human relations be kept according to equality based on Neigh boring Love. The relationship should be beneficial for each other and people should live in abundance by practicing equal economic life and moderation. Besides, he insisted that everyone live in accordance with absolute value criterion called "Heaven`s will", which makes it possible to become an executor who translate the idea of neighboring love and sharing interest into action. An executor should love others like himself and try to be beneficial for others. Not only did he emphasize the importance of humanism but also he introduced mutual respect to establish social morals. The humanism he mentioned can be found when family members get along with one another with love and modesty. He realized strongly that the necessity of science education and technical training were required to improve people`s lives or the advanced science and technology would be of little benefit to the public`s interest. At first, he educated people to establish a scientific mind based on the knowledge of scientific rationality. That is, people are asked to be free from the idea that they should live up to "Heaven`s order". Moreover, he chose absolute frugality and the dignity of labor as the contents of education because they were beneficial to everyday life. These days, Mo Tzu`s private form of education has several influences on Korean education. First, It helps us to establish proper educational goals because Mo Tzu`s educational objectives involves cultivating the intellectual abilities within people. Second, regarding educational content, when subjects such as politics, economy, ethics, science and labor provide diversity and speciality, they are worthy of education for the universal person. Third, regarding educational method, he emphasized the importance of practice by suggesting learning theory representing the idea that knowing should be accompanied by practice.
