본 연구는 포스트모더니즘적 관점에서 자유선택활동 시간에서의 시간, 공간적 의미를 찾아보고 사회 문화적 요인이 유아의 자유선택활동에 어떻게 영향을 주고 있는가를 분석하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 유아가 자유롭게 놀이할 수 있는 자유선택활동 시간을 중요하게 보는 유아교육기관 중 두 기관을 선정하여 만 5세반 유아들과 교사들이 자유선택활동에 대해 어떻게 인식하고 있는지를 알아보았다. 그리고 자유선택활동 시간에 유아들의 흥미, 개별성, 자유의지에 따라 선택의 기회를 제공하고 있다고 생각하는 교사의 의견과는 달리 유아들은 자유선택활동 시간을 자유롭지 못하다고 생각하게 된 요인을 분석하였다. 포스트모더니즘적 관점에서 유아의 자유선택활동에 영향을 주고 있는 요인을 분석하는 과정을 통해 자유선택활동 시간이 모더너즘에 입각한 시간이라는 것을 알 수 있었다. 유아교육기관의 현실은 보편적인 발달에 가치중립성을 지향하게 되고 학습자의 흥미와 자유의지를 고려하기보다는 가르치는 자 위주가 된다. 따라서 포스트모던 관점에서의 자유선택활동의 시간과 공간은 획일적이고 절대적인 변할 수 없는 것이 아니라 보이지 않는 선형적인 시간표에서 탈피하여 유아들과 함께 재구성해야 한다. 그리고 유아가 흥미 있고 직접적으로 경험할 수 있는 삶의 현장으로 확장되어야 한다.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the meanings of time and space of free choice activity time from a post-modern perspective, and to analyze the effects of socio-cultural factors on children`s free choice activities. The researcher studied two early childhood classrooms which emphasized the importance of free choice activity time in their programs and beliefs. Using qualititive methods of participant observation and in-depth interview, the research explored 5 year-old children`s and their teachers` perceptions of free choice activity time. While teachers thought they respected young children`s interest, individuality, free will and provided them enough opportunities for free choice, young children did not perceive the same way. The research analyzed major factors of different perceptions between teachers and children. Researcher found that currently free choice activity time run from modernism point of view. It was also found that early childhood classrooms put more importance on children`s general developmental characteristics. Hence classes got more teacher centered rather than consider the learner`s interest and free will. Therefore, from the post-modern perspective, time and space of free choice activity time should be reconstructed with the children. The free choice activity time should make flexible use of time and space instead of following invisible linear time schedule. Free choice activity time should be expanded to children`s real life context in which children can directly experience following their own interest.
